Cold Weather Motorcycle Riding |
| Those bikers that live in regions with this kind of weather have probably seen a picture like this first hand. We do not recommended riding in these conditions, however there are many days when you can ride and there are the brazen few that would grab their gear, dust this baby off, and hopefully go back inside. The Smell of the wood stoves burning and the crisp air accelerates the mind and refreshes the soul. Weather permitting break out the leather coat and winter boots and let the adventure begin. The proper gear is necessary, a warm coat, lots of layers, a pair of gloves, lined pants, boots and whatever else it takes to stay warm and we are on the road again. |

Choosing men’s jackets or women’s jackets for the ride can be hit and miss. The last thing we want is to spend our money and just leave them hanging in the closet. As the season begins nylon or a light leather coat is always a good option. If you do choose a polymer material consider spraying it with “Scotch Guard”. Several coatings are recommended for the buildup necessary to actually provide good protection. It not only will protect from the rain or wet snow, but it also will act as a wind break to keep freezing air from penetrating. Washing a polymer jacket will remove the coating and the process must be repeated. Getting the proper fit is the next thing you have to consider. Because cold weather motorcycling requires layers, the jacket you choose should be a size larger to allow extra clothing that you will need to stay warm.
Leather pants are always a favorite when the cold season starts. They look great on men and women. The only problem, even with a lining when leather gets cold it will transfer right to the skin. This may sound ridiculous but take it from someone who has been there, woman’s pantyhose as the first layer will help keep you warm. The leather will still look great and the nylon will not bulk you up so you can still be styling. For you big guy’s you will probably need extra extra large. If this is not for you there are underclothes designed specifically for tighter fitting clothes. When it gets really cold don’t forget flannel underwear. Loose fitting styles of riding pants will accommodate the extra bulk but some may have to consider a size larger. Lined pants and motorcycle chaps are another option for staying warm. Long tours may require a more sustained wind break. Wearing a rain suit over your riding gear will break the wind and make the ride more comfortable. Also consider a leather bandanna and or, a balaclava (a form of headgear covering the whole head, exposing only the face or upper part of it, and sometimes only the eyes)made from stretch polyester fleece with a wind and waterproof rubber shell. Tucking it into the collar of your jacket will keep the wind off the neck. Finally, heated socks and heated gloves will keep the fingers and toes nice and toasty.
