Riding a motorcycle in wet weather is not usually a motorcyclist’s first choice, but being prepared in case is the smart choice.  Great caution needs to be taken due to the multitude of factors.  Protecting the body from wind chill is important for comfort.  There are some great styles of waterproof rain suits that look good but are not functional.  The more affordable rain suits are made of polypropylene, coated nylon or some other top secret material, but should be designed with motorcycling in mind.  Make sure to check how the front enclosure is designed.  If it is not sealed (ie Velcro) then it will leak.  The zippers on the pockets should zip down not up and also should be sealed.  A balaclava (form of headgear covering the whole head, exposing only the face or upper part of it, and sometimes only the eyes)made from stretch polyester fleece with a wind and waterproof rubber shell will keep the rain from running off of your helmet down inside of the rain suit.  Elastic in the wrist or Velcro to adjust will keep your sleeves from blowing up and letting water in.  Motorcycle gloves designed for wet weather with cuffs to cover the jacket’s wrist will keep your hands dry and complete that connection between hands and arms.

Rain shoes or boot covers or shoe covers designed for motorcycling are necessary to keep your feet dry. The front tire will throw the water in the road your way and it wont take long to saturate your boots or shoes.  Boot covers or shoe covers are convenient for quick dressing when the weather sneaks up on you while on tour.

Staying dry is not the only thing that has to be considered.  A seasoned rider knows the in’s and out’s of motorcycling in the rain.  If you have not experienced wet weather riding take a moment to absorb a few tricks to keep you safe.  These well learned tips may save a novice motorcyclist’s life.  When the roads are rain slick they are not biker friendly.  It is especially dangerous to ride on roads when the rain has just started.   Extreme Caution should be taken when accelerating to avoid fishtailing or wheel spin when taking off.  The oil and dirt that has accumulated makes it very slick when water is applied.  Good advise is to ride in the center of the lane,  it is not as slippery as riding in the automobile tire tracks.  Also, caution should be taken in cornering to avoid manhole covers and painted lines.   Our final tip of the day is to approach stop signs cautiously as these areas are known to have excessive amounts of oil deposited from automobiles making the road very slick.  If you are caught in the rain being prepared is the ideal situation.  Rain gear in your saddlebags, and a plan for riding it out is the safest scenario.
